Putting Fundamentals Free
Gate drill, ladder, clock, and speed control. On a small or busy green, shorten the ladder distances and run the lag-putt block first, while it is clear.
Blocks
Gate drill — 3 feet
Hit 20 putts from 3 feet through a tee gate
- place two tees just wider than your putter head, about 6 inches in front of the ball
- send the ball through the gate
Ladder drill — 10/20/30 feet
Place tees at 10, 20, and 30 feet from your starting point
- putt one ball to each distance, trying to stop it within 2 feet of the tee
- work from short to long, then long to short
Clock drill — 4 balls at 4 feet
Place 4 balls around the hole at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, each 4 feet from the cup
- putt each one in order
- make all 4; if you miss, start over from the beginning
Speed control — lag putts 30-40 feet
Hit lag putts from 30-40 feet, focusing on speed, not line
- leave every putt within a 3-foot circle around the hole
- you are not trying to hole them
