The Tee Shot Rebuild
Twelve driver sessions that build one repeatable shape first before adding speed within a 30-yard target window.
How you'll know it worked
Measured in session 1 and again in session 12: Drives finishing in a 30-yard window, out of 20; Middle-six average carry.
Twelve sessions: a test, five for the shape, five for speed, the same test again. Two range trips a week makes it six weeks. One makes it three months. Both work.
Each session is 30–40 minutes and about 30 balls with the driver. No launch monitor required at any point.
The order matters: shape first, speed second
Every golfer wants more distance, and almost every golfer loses more strokes to where the drive finishes than to how far it goes. A 240-yard drive in the fairway beats a 265-yard drive in the trees by about a stroke and a half, every time it happens.
So this program spends its first half building one tee shot you trust, and only then adds speed — inside the shape, never at its expense. Done in the other order, you get faster at hitting it somewhere you don't want to be.
The honest expectation
Twelve sessions of this will not add 30 yards. What it should do:
- Window: roughly 10 of 20 → 14 of 20
- Carry: 5–10 more yards, from strike and sequencing rather than effort
- And a written driver/fallback decision for every hole on your home course
That combination — more fairways, a little more carry, no more hero driver on the wrong holes — is usually worth 3–4 strokes, none of which required a swing change.
Sessions
Session 1 — Baseline
Two tests to start. Do not practice anything else this session — the test is the session.
The window test
Build a fairway 30 yards wide
- pace 30 yards (35 normal steps) along the tee line first to see the width, if the line is clear enough to do it safely
- with a busy tee line, skip the pacing and go straight to centering your window on one flag, 15 yards either side
- pick two markers that far apart downrange
- write your two markers in the block's notes field so you can use the same window in the last session
Hit 20 drives at the target window
- full routine on every ball: stand behind the ball, pick the target, one practice swing, hit
- be strict with yourself and count only the balls landing inside the window
The carry test
Hit 10 more drives and enter the carry of each ball in Carries
- the number does not have to be exact, but it should be read the same way in session 12
- range balls fly 10-15 yards shorter than the ball you play, especially with a driver
- the score is the average of the middle six (the app drops the two longest and two shortest); that is your honest number, not your best-ever number
2One shape you trust
Pick one shape (draw or fade) and commit to it for all five shape sessions. A shape is a curve that starts where you aimed and finishes inside the 30-yard window. A 40-yard slice is a miss, not a shape.

3One shape you trust
Same shape as last session. The window is the session's score, with the start-line check still in place.

4One shape you trust
Same shape, same window. The window is the session's score.
- The window, scored · score: Drives in the window
5One shape you trust
Same shape and window. The last 8 balls go to your fallback tee club, scored in its own window.
- The window, scored · score: Drives in the window
- The reliable alternative · score: Fallback club in the window
6One shape you trust
Last shape session. Target by now: 14 of 20 with a shape you can name before every swing.

- The reliable alternative · score: Fallback club in the window
7Speed inside the shape
Now chase distance. The rule for all five speed sessions: a fast swing that leaves the window does not count. These sessions are about 40 driver swings, so pace yourself between blocks. If the last set turns to junk, note it and stop — tired swings teach the wrong thing.

8Speed inside the shape
Same speed sequence, in order. A fast swing that leaves the window does not count. Pace yourself, and stop if the swings turn to junk.

11Speed inside the shape
Last speed session before the retest. A fast swing that leaves the window does not count. Save something for the retest — it deserves fresh swings.

12Retest
Session 1 again: the window test, then the carry test. Same markers, same strictness.
