The Strike Reset
Twelve sessions with one mid-iron that fix low-point control first, then build one repeatable effort.
How you'll know it worked
Measured in session 1 and again in session 12: Flush strikes, out of 15; Middle-eight carry spread at 80% effort.
Twelve sessions: a test, five on where the club meets the ground, five on one repeatable effort, the same test again. Take them at whatever pace you actually practice.
Each session is 30–40 minutes and about 35 balls, most of them with one mid-iron. No launch monitor required.
Almost everything you want is in the strike
Distance, direction, and that compressed feeling that keeps you coming back — they all live within about a centimeter on the clubface. Before working on where the ball goes, this program works on how it comes off the face, because a centered strike fixes half of everything else for free.
The two things that move a strike from occasional to repeatable: where the club bottoms out, and swinging at an effort you can actually reproduce. That's the two blocks.
The honest expectation
- Flush strikes: roughly 6 of 15 → 10 of 15
- One-effort spread: tightening by around a third
- And the quiet one: your "bad" shots start finishing on the front of the green instead of two clubs short
If the numbers don't move across twelve honest sessions, the practice isn't working for you — and knowing that is worth more than another year of scraping range balls sideways.
Sessions
Session 1 — Baseline
Two tests to start, both with the same mid-iron (a 7-iron for most golfers). The test is the session. Before session 2, put a can of athlete's foot spray in your bag for the face check.
The strike count
Hit 15 full swings at a target with your mid-iron
- full routine on every ball: stand behind the ball, pick the target, one practice swing, hit
- after each, give one honest yes or no: was it flush?
- flush is not the same as straight: no sting in the hands, the ball jumped, and contact felt like almost nothing
- if you are debating, it was not flush
- on a mat, a slightly fat strike can skid and still feel fine; if the ball came out short and high with no jump, it was not flush
- plan to retest on the same surface you test on today
The one-effort spread
Hit 10 balls at 80% effort and enter the carry of each ball in Carries
- 80% is the swing you could repeat 10 times without a bad one
- read the carry (where the ball first lands) against the range markers; halfway between markers is a real read
- the number does not have to be exact, but it should be read the same way today and at the retest
- the score is the spread of the middle eight, in yards (the app drops the longest and the shortest)
2Low point
Fat and thin are the same mistake: the club bottoming out in the wrong place. Fix the low point and both misses improve together.
