The Short Game Reset
Eighteen sessions covering wedge distance control, greenside variety, and scored pressure games.
How you'll know it worked
Measured in session 1 and again in session 18: Par 18 test, total strokes (par is 18); Putts made from 6 feet, out of 15.
Eighteen sessions. Not six weeks.
Every practice plan you'll find online is organized by calendar week, which assumes you'll get to the practice green every Tuesday and Thursday forever. You won't. It'll rain, you'll travel, the kids will have something, and by the middle of week two you'll have "fallen behind" on a plan that was arbitrary to begin with.
So this one counts sessions. If you get three a week, it takes six weeks. If you get one a week, it takes eighteen. Either way you're on session 7 of 18, not two weeks behind.
Each session runs 45–60 minutes on a practice green with a bunker if you have one.
Why the short game first
If you're somewhere between a 12 and a 25 handicap, more of your strokes are lost inside 100 yards than anywhere else in the bag. Not because your wedges are worse than your driver — because you hit far more of those shots, and because the misses are more expensive. A pulled drive costs you half a stroke. A chunked chip costs you a full one, and often two.
The short game also improves faster than the full swing. It's less athletically demanding, the feedback is immediate, and the movements are smaller and easier to change. This is the highest return on practice time available to almost every amateur.
Sessions
Session 1 — Baseline test
Two tests to start. Do not practice anything else this session — the test is the session. This one needs open green access, so plan it for a day you can chip and hole out.
The Par 18 test
Play 9 holes around the practice green: from each spot, chip, then putt out
- pick 9 different spots with a mix of lies, distances from 5 to 30 yards, and at least one bunker if you have access
- on a small or busy green, play 6 spots instead, from 5 to 15 yards, and run that same 6-spot round in session 18
- par is 2 for each hole
- write down every hole and log the total strokes (23, not plus 5, or 13 for a 6-hole round)
- before you leave, describe each spot by landmarks in the block's notes so you can play the same round in the last session
Fifteen putts from 6 feet
Hit 15 putts from 6 feet and count how many go in
- this is scored separately from the Par 18 test
2First wedge: measure
Pick the first of your three highest-lofted clubs. If you carry only two wedges, the 9-iron is your third club here; the lengths work the same. Hit 10 balls at each of three swing lengths and write the carries down. Build each length in its own block, not interleaved.
- 9 o'clock length · score: Carry spread
- 10:30 length · score: Carry spread
- Full length · score: Carry spread
3First wedge: confirm
Repeat the same club as last session and see if the numbers hold.
- 9 o'clock length · score: Carry spread
- 10:30 length · score: Carry spread
- Full length · score: Carry spread
4Second wedge: measure
Second of your three highest-lofted clubs. Ten balls at each of three swing lengths, carries written down.
- 9 o'clock length · score: Carry spread
- 10:30 length · score: Carry spread
- Full length · score: Carry spread
5Second wedge: confirm
Repeat the same club as last session and see if the numbers hold.
- 9 o'clock length · score: Carry spread
- 10:30 length · score: Carry spread
- Full length · score: Carry spread
6Third wedge: measure
Third of your three highest-lofted clubs. Ten balls at each of three swing lengths, carries written down.
- 9 o'clock length · score: Carry spread
- 10:30 length · score: Carry spread
- Full length · score: Carry spread
7Third wedge: confirm
Repeat the same club and see if the numbers hold. By the end of this session you have nine numbers: three lengths for three clubs. Enter them in the wedge distances of My Bag, the app's yardage card: 9 o'clock goes in the half column, 10:30 in three-quarter, and full length in full.

8Greenside variety
Rotate four greenside situations, 5 balls each, naming a landing spot before every shot. Tight lie with the flag close: the ball is on bare, firm ground, so play it low with a less-lofted club, land it early, and let it roll. Tight lie with the flag far. Rough with the flag close: use your most lofted club and a longer swing than feels right, and expect run-out because rough kills spin. Bunker, or a deep rough lie if you have no bunker access.

14Up-and-down ladder
A game with consequences. The gap between what you can do relaxed and what you can do with something at stake is what shows up on the course. Needs open green access, so plan for a quiet hour.

15The 4-foot gauntlet
A game with consequences: short putts under a restart rule.
- The 4-foot gauntlet · score: Longest streak of makes
16Worst ball chipping
A game with consequences, and the closest thing to real pressure you can create alone. Needs open green access.
- Worst ball chipping · score: Total strokes
17Over the shoulder
A game with consequences: nine lies you did not choose. Every other session in this program lets you pick the spot, and a round never does. Needs open green access.
- Over the shoulder, nine holes · score: Strokes, random lies
18Retest
Session 1 again: the Par 18 test from the same nine spots, then the 15 putts from 6 feet. Same spots, same strictness.
