The Putting Reset
Twelve sessions on the practice green that build speed control first, then make the short putts automatic.
How you'll know it worked
Measured in session 1 and again in session 12: Putts made from 6 feet, out of 15; Lag putts finishing inside a putter length, out of 24.
Twelve sessions: a test, five of speed, five of short putts, the same test again. Miss a week and nothing resets — the next session is just the next session.
Each session is 30–40 minutes on a practice green. Bring six balls and a few tees; your putter is the tape measure — it's about 3 feet long, so 6 feet is two putter lengths, 20 feet is seven, and a "3-foot circle" is one putter length around the hole.
Three-putts come from the first putt
Not from missing 4-footers — from leaving 40-footers eight feet short and then missing the 8-footer that shouldn't have existed. Speed control is 90% of long putting, which is why it gets the first block. The short ones get the second, because once the first putt dies near the hole, the second putt being automatic is what turns two putts into a routine instead of an adventure.
The honest expectation
- Lag ladder: 4 or 5 more than your baseline
- From 6 feet: 2 or 3 more than your baseline
- On the course: three-putts from 3–4 a round toward 1, which is two strokes without changing your stroke
Sessions
Session 1 — Baseline
Two tests to start. The test is the session.
The 6-foot test
Hit 15 putts from 6 feet (two putter lengths)
- 5 putts from each of three different sides of the hole, so the break varies
- drop a tee at each spot while you putt
- before you leave, describe the three spots by landmarks in the block's notes (left edge, uphill side, by the sprinkler head) so you can use the same spots in the last session
The lag ladder
Hit 24 lag putts: 6 balls each from 20, 30, 40, and 50 feet
- drop a tee at each distance; pacing is accurate enough, and a long pace is about 3 feet
- you are not trying to hole them — count how many finish inside a putter length of the hole
- if you do not have 50 feet of green, hit 8 balls each from 15, 25, and 35 feet, and run that same short ladder in session 12
2Speed
The next five sessions are about speed control. The lag ladder is the score in every one.
- The lag ladder, scored · score: Inside a putter length
- Leapfrog
- Eyes-closed calibration
3Speed
Same speed work: the scored ladder, leapfrog, and eyes-closed calibration.

4Speed

5Speed

6Speed
Last speed session. Target by now: 3 more than your baseline on the ladder, and no more than a couple of lag putts all session finishing outside 5 feet of the hole.

7The short ones
Make the short putts automatic, and keep your lag speed warm, since half the retest is the ladder.
- Keep the lag warm
- The gate drill · score: Through the gate
- The 4-foot gauntlet · score: Longest streak of makes
- The 6-foot finish
8The short ones
Same short-putt work: the warm-up ladder, the gate drill, the gauntlet, and the 6-foot finish.
- Keep the lag warm
- The gate drill · score: Through the gate
- The 4-foot gauntlet · score: Longest streak of makes
- The 6-foot finish
9The short ones
Same short-putt work: the warm-up ladder, the gate drill, the gauntlet, and the 6-foot finish.
- Keep the lag warm
- The gate drill · score: Through the gate
- The 4-foot gauntlet · score: Longest streak of makes
- The 6-foot finish
10The short ones
Same short-putt work: the warm-up ladder, the gate drill, the gauntlet, and the 6-foot finish.
- Keep the lag warm
- The gate drill · score: Through the gate
- The 4-foot gauntlet · score: Longest streak of makes
- The 6-foot finish
11The short ones
Last short-putt session before the retest.
- Keep the lag warm
- The gate drill · score: Through the gate
- The 4-foot gauntlet · score: Longest streak of makes
- The 6-foot finish
12Retest
Session 1 again: the 6-foot test from the same three spots, then the same 24-putt ladder. Same green if you can get it, same strictness.
- The 6-foot test · score: Putts made
- The lag ladder · score: Inside a putter length
