Long Game

The Break 90 Plan

Twenty-four sessions that remove the disasters (penalties, three-putts, and chunked chips), tracked with five stats from your rounds instead of a range test.

24 sessions · about 20 hours in all · Lower My Handicap

How you'll know it worked

Five round stats: From your next round and every round during the program, record five numbers plus your score: penalty strokes, three-putts, fairways hit, greens in regulation, and up-and-downs (made out of attempted). A green in regulation means on the green with two strokes still left for par: a par 4's green in two, a par 5's in three. An up-and-down attempt is any miss of the green from inside about 30 yards where a chip and a putt could still save par. Count the same way every round, because the trend only means something if the counting never changes. The three scoring rounds at the end of the program are where these numbers get logged in the app. For rounds before that, keep the counts on your scorecard.

Twenty-four sessions, organized in four blocks of six. Counted in sessions, not weeks — get three a week and it's two months, get one a week and it's six. You're never behind. Most sessions run 30–45 minutes; each block below says what to hit and how much.

Before any of it, one thing has to be said plainly, because it determines everything else in this plan.

You don't break 90 by hitting good shots. You break 90 by not hitting terrible ones.

Score a few rounds honestly in the high 90s and the pattern is always the same. It isn't that the good shots weren't good enough. It's four or five holes where something came apart — a penalty off the tee, a chunked chip that stayed in the rough, a three-putt from 40 feet, a hero shot from the trees that hit a tree.

Do the arithmetic. A 95 is usually five blow-up holes sitting on top of an 89. Turn four doubles and a triple into bogeys and you've found six strokes — and those strokes almost never come from a lack of ability. They come from a lack of a plan.

So this program spends most of its time removing disasters. It will not add 20 yards to your driver. It will make your bad holes bogeys instead of triples, and that is the entire distance between 95 and 88.

Track five stats, starting now

From your very next round, and every round during this program, write down five numbers:

  1. Penalty strokes — OB, water, unplayable
  2. Three-putts
  3. Fairways hit
  4. Greens in regulation — your ball on the green with two putts left for par (a par 4's green in two)
  5. Up-and-downs — missed the green, then chipped on and holed the putt anyway: got up and down / attempted

Most golfers trying to break 90 are carrying 3–5 penalty strokes and 3–4 three-putts per round. That's seven to nine strokes from two categories, and both are fixable without touching your swing.

These five numbers tell you which block below matters most for you. If you're taking zero penalties and four three-putts, weight your time toward Block 3 and move faster through Block 1.

The honest expectation

Twenty-four sessions of this will not guarantee you break 90. What it should do:

That's six or seven strokes, which turns a 95 into the high 80s. It's also entirely made of things that don't require you to swing better than you already do.

If you track the five stats and they don't move, the plan isn't working for you — and knowing that after eight weeks is worth far more than another year of buying large buckets and hoping.

Sessions

Session 1 in full. The rest run in the app.

Session 1 — One shape you trust 35 min

Block practice with the driver: one target, one shape (draw or fade), scored on a 30-yard fairway window. Commit to the shape for all six tee-shot sessions. The window you build today is used for the whole program.

The one-shape drill

Driver · 20 balls · score: Inside the fairway window

Build a fairway 30 yards wide

  • pace 30 yards (35 normal steps) along the tee line first to see the width
  • pick two markers that far apart downrange
  • write your two markers in the block's notes so you can use the same window all program

After a short warm-up, hit 20 drives at the target window with the shape you are most comfortable with

  • a shape is a curve that starts where you aimed and finishes inside the window; a 40-yard slice is a miss, not a shape
  • aim down the side that gives the curve room and let it move: a fade starts down the left side, a draw down the right (reverse if you play left-handed)
  • if the curve cannot stay inside 30 yards even from the window's edge, shrink it first: tee it lower, grip pressure down, swing at 80%
  • you are not trying to hit it straight — a predictable curve you can aim is the goal
  • count the balls landing inside the window
